Situated on a bluff overlooking the James River in Goochland County, Tuckahoe was the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson and is a designated National Historic Landmark. Built between 1730 and 1740, this unique Randolph family plantation home and many of its original outbuildings have stood the test of time for almost three centuries. Given its original outbuildings along Plantation Street, which include Quarters for the enslaved people, the Old Kitchen, the Smokehouse, and more, Tuckahoe represents one of the most complete early 18th century plantation layouts in North America. The grounds also feature formal Floral Gardens, the colonial Herb Garden, as well as other charming pockets of gardens.
School Groups:
School tours are hands-on, interdisciplinary, and complement the Virginia History and Social Science Standards of Learning and can be customized to fit any grade level and cover many historical topics. Students will participate in rotations through our Gardens, first floor of the Main House, the South Lawn, and Plantation Street.
The student tour rate is $5 per person (1 comped chaperone for every 10 students).
Adult Groups:
The unique site of Tuckahoe can interest adult groups of any age and background- whether it be our gardens, architecture, enslaved research, presidential connection, or colonial history. For our guests with limited mobility, we suggest taking advantage of the reestablished carriage circle in front of the historic mansion, which is accessible to standard size shuttle buses. Please note that our grounds and the home are not wheelchair accessible and entry into the home and gift shop requires ascending several steps.
Adult groups of 10 people or more qualify for our group tour rate of $10 per person.
Please note that all group tours require a minimum of two weeks advance notice and are subject to availability. For additional information, please call us at (804) 971-8329 or email historictuckahoetours@gmail.com.
