Wallace Smith was a child who was born into slavery at Tuckahoe on July 3, 1855. His mother is recorded as Ellen (the cook) and the father is assumed to be her husband, Ed Smith. He is thought to have been named after his uncle (Ed’s brother, Wallace, who ran away from Tuckahoe in 1851 and whose ultimate fate is unknown to us). Wallace’s siblings were Daniel, Jane, Dilsey, Jordan, Nancy, and Harriet. Wallace appears on the Allen account list taken on March 1, 1856 and is noted to have died in June of that year making him just one year old. The cause of his death is not known.
