“For a time, it seems Gabriel evaded capture as this ad was still being run in 1784—5 years after his escape. However evidence suggests that he was found at some point and returned to Thomas Mann Randolph. A 1790 document lists a man named Gabriel as the carpenter and it was most likely the same man. If it was, it is likely that he endured severe punishment to discourage further escape attempts.
When Thomas Mann died in 1793, his estate including many of the enslaved workers was sold off. Gabriel’s name is not on the list. It is possible he had been sold at some point between 1790 and 1793 or that he had died.”
