John was an enslaved worker at Tuckahoe during the Allen period. He is thought to have been born sometime around 1834. His father was Olney Lewis and his siblings were Stephen, Henry, and Frances. All were listed as field hands. No mention was ever made of John’s mother on any account records.
Sometime after July 1850, John was sold for $623 and separated from his family when he was 16 years old. Why he was sold, where he ended up and his ultimate fate remains unknown to us.
