Joe was an enslaved man who worked at Tuckahoe during the Allen period. He is thought to have been born sometime between 1821-1823. His name first appears on the Allen account in 1858 where he is listed as a field hand. His wife, Lucy, and his daughter, Jane, both worked inside the house at Tuckahoe. In May 1858, the couple had another daughter named Rachel. As both Lucy and Jane worked inside the house it is quite possible that the family lived in one of the cabins which still stands along Plantation Street.
