A man simply known as Hubbard was an enslaved bricklayer who worked at Tuckahoe during the Allen period. Joseph Allen purchased Tuckahoe in 1850 and shortly thereafter purchased Hubbard and tasked him with several projects including bricking over the spring towards the bottom of the hill, making the brick walkways around the house, and creating the brick path known as the “battercake express” which leads from the house to the kitchen building. Hubbard’s work can still be seen around the property today.
