Pleaching is a technique of interweaving branches of trees that are planted in a line to create a fence or hedge. European hornbeams, flexible trees which are tolerant of most soil types, were used to established Tuckahoe’s pleached arbor here. Pleaching came back into fashion in the mid 1800’s as an artistic way to create living arches or avenues. There are outstanding examples of pleached arbors at the Governors Palace in Williamsburg and at Hampton Court Palace in England.
